Name: Brenna Song
Alias: Sailor Mercury
Age: 22
Birthdate: September 10
Sex: Female
Occupation: Student
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Black
Height: 5'2"
Face Claim: Ziyi Zhang
Appearance:
She's a short girl with olive colored skin and dark eyes. She does not wear too much make-up unless lip gloss counts. She does not put too much stock in her appearance. She dresses conservatively, sure that her clothes are modest while still chic. Hers is a very particular style, not overly hipster but still rather unique in her own way. Her hair she normally wears up in a bun, but when she does wear it down, it naturally falls straight. Normally, however, if she does choose to wear it down, she'll give it some waves and volume.
Personality:
She has no personality. At least that's what people who went to school would tell you if you asked them. Brenna is more robot than human, just a compendium of factoids which aided her in becoming top of the class, but did nothing in terms of social standing. She was a veritable bookworm, kept to herself, stayed after to study or tutor, and more or less didn't have too many ties that kept her distracted from her school work.
Truth be told it had become a curse. At first she worked hard to please her seemingly never satisfied mother. Then it became a convenient excuse to hide her insecurities with. She didn't have to face the fact that she was shy or nervous around people when she had books and reports to drown herself in. In some ways it was because she was very emotional that she allowed herself to shut everything down around her. Better to feel nothing than to feel lonely.
But Brenna is a very lonely woman, but she's also very good at keeping her emotions to herself. Her mother taught her to remain guarded, to never share too much about yourself lest you annoy people with your incessant complaining. It was a point of pride for her mother than the family always appear at all times like nothing was wrong with them ever. The Songs were always in constant control. And Brenna is terrified of what might happen between herself and her mother if she found out it were otherwise.
Beneath all of that, Brenna is a highly intelligent woman with a passion for learning. She enjoys reading, music, and chess. Her goal is become a trauma surgeon like her mother. But if she was honest with herself, she would much prefer pediatrics... Or maybe chucking medicine all together and going strictly into music. It would have to be her guilty pleasure... And she's ashamed to admit she's bought herself a flute and has begun training herself to play it. Her mother would say it's a waste of time, but music is one of her true loves. The only thing better is swimming.
When it comes to relationships, Brenna is a devoted friend and companion... Or at least she thinks she would be. She would be grateful to have any friend care for her, really. The prospect of a romantic relationship not only seems so far fetched to her it doesn't warrant too much thought, it also terrifies her. She is pretty convinced she would fail at being romantic no matter how hard she tried. That, of course, does not stop her from her second guilty pleasure... Reading romance novels. But hey... she's only human.
Powers and Abilities:
Brenna's powers as Sailor Mercury revolve around the element of water. Her first power when she awakens will be bubble spray, a defensive power which lessens the visibility of the enemy. As her power progresses, her attacks will become more geared to offensive attacks, but she's more a support power than a power house like Venus or Mars.
Her true ability is in devising strategies of attack or divining weaknesses in the enemy. She uses her mind as her chief weapon in every battle.
Family:
Abby Song - mother
Ken Song - father
Other Connections:
She's not overly close with anybody at the moment.
History:
Her childhood is easy to summarize. She was made to study. From an early age, her mother invested a lot of time and money into ensuring her daughter received the best education. Private tutoring when she was too young for school and private schools when she was finally old enough to attend. When Brenna wasn't at school she was studying, and when she wasn't studying she was sleeping. There was some time put aside for her swim lessons, but overall, the priority was her education. She was taught early and often that anything less than top marks was worthy of shame and that she would never succeed like her mother if she didn't do well in school.
That fanaticism to constantly be perfect is probably why Brenna's father wound up separating from her mother when she was eleven. This crushed Brenna who had often looked to her father as the only outlet in an oppressive house. True, she was grateful to her mother for caring enough in her future to push her hard and to teach her to set goals, but her father was the one who taught her to rest, to relax, to laugh and have fun. And when he separated, he did not just move into the next neighborhood. As a freelance photographer, he found the first opportunity to go to Africa to shoot for a nature magazine. She begged him to take her with him, and though he was tempted to, he did not want to uproot her from school or enter into a nasty divorce trial with Abby.
He visits only twice a year, sending postcards to Brenna on her birthday and sometimes a collection of photographs he takes. She misses him terribly but does not talk to her mother about it. A part of her does resent the fact that not once did her mother seem upset that her father left. In fact, she seemed to go on as if nothing had happened, continuing to push Brenna hard to do well and pushing herself hard to become chief of surgery.
Her mother did eventually get that promotion, and not long after, Brenna was graduating from college. She'd indeed done well. Had won many a chess tournament for the school, was top of the class, and had done very well on the school's swim team. The scholarship to any University in the UK of her choosing was nice, but the truth was that she was more glad she got it so that her mother would be pleased. She let her mother advise her where to go and even stood back as she made all the arrangements for it.
Brenna now lives in a nice but small one bedroom apartment near the campus of her University. She's in her final year of undergraduate work and is studying like a crazed woman for her medical examinations to get into medical school.
Writing Sample:
She always lost track of the time. Honestly, she should set an alarm or something to let her know when midnight came. Another night devoted to studying for the first exams of the semester. She was rather excited for them. Aware of how weird that was, Brenna shook her head and got to her feet, reaching over to switch the blue butterfly lamp off.
Her slippered feet glided over the hardwood floor and she settled herself onto the corner of her twin sized bed. Not for the first time did she want to kick herself for the set up of her room. She'd let her mother decorate it, and truth be told, sometimes sitting in it made her feel like a child again. She could have at least bought her a bigger bed...
"Just remember that you know this content inside and out," she said with a deep breath. The pre-exam ritual was beginning. The self pep talks. Because nobody else was going to make her feel good about what was coming up. And that realization was enough to bring that feeling crashing down.
"Fantastic..." she grumbled, laying down. "Just what I need to do well on an exam. More self loathing." She really did wish she'd snap out of it. This was not the year she needed to go falling to pieces in. There was much too much to do.
